Interesting you mention the plague in this episode. I've just finished reading Alice Robert's 'Crypt: Life, Death and Disease in the Middle Ages and Beyond' where there's a chapter on the plague. Fascinating that it has been around since prehistoric times and is the same variant throughout history.

That’s on my reading list! I think the work of my friend Lauren is mentioned in it? Maybe the anchoress? I find it fascinating, too, especially how you can head somewhere like parts of the US and quite easily catch the plague from various rodents there. I sometimes wonder what other long-lasting diseases may pop up from the permafrost, as it melts away?

Yes, she is!

I saw Alice talk at Eden Court recently (hence reading the book). She has a very good way of getting science over to the layman.

I have also just finished reading ‘The Bone Cave: A Journey Through Myth and Memory’ by Dougie Strang which I think you would enjoy.

And finally, check out the Forestry and Land Scotland resources (if you’re not already aware of them) at www.forestry and land.gov.scot/what-we-do/biodiversity-and-conservation/historic-environment-conservation/learning/into-the-wildwoods

I really like what Matt Ritchie is doing in terms of education.

Ooh, The Bone Cave certainly looks up my street! Thanks!

Agree about Alice Roberts, she's a great broadcaster, in the traditional sense of the word, bring often complex topics to the broader public, in a way which is manageable and useful.

For some weird reason your link didn't work, but I managed to track down the page. Super stuff! I've downloaded several of the PDFs to read more later, but I'm really happy these resources are available. My brother in law, Euan, is a researcher based at the UHI, specialising in forestry (elms! Especially elms!), so he probably knows all about this.

We're visiting Scotland in July and I'm looking forward to catching up with all his work. Maybe if you are free we could also meet up, if you wanted? We'll be staying with Euan and my sister, Lydia, who have recently moved to the Black Isle, although we won't always have transport.

It would be great to meet up in person, if you have time! Whereabouts on the Black Isle are Euan and Lydia? We're at Tore.

That's great! You're not too far, then! They're in Culbokie. We should sort something out. I suspect we'll be going on several walks, so that might be a good chance, but we can think about it a bit nearer the time (although this year is disappearing somewhere, rather rapidly!), once we have a better idea of our time and schedule.

Sounds good 🙂

Well, now I'm wondering why she ended up being chased. Or did I just forget? Wait, she was being chased from the U-town, not Yulebridge. LOL!
