Lovely Note. Happy travels, of course. Love the images. We have a craving to explore the Far East but it’s a few years off, I suspect. We shall travel vicariously for now! The pictures from your ramble look amazing. Ailsa seems delightfully curious. And running. JoJo does some. Me, less so. Though trail running seemed to fit with my ambling style.
I’ve also thought trail running would make more sense to me too, but whenever I’ve tried it in the past, I always end up stopping to investigate all manner of things. I’ve settled on walking instead…!
There’s an awful lot of world out there to explore, so many places I’d like to see (and live). Then there’s always the added problem of wanting to return to those places you already know, too!
I wouldn’t worry, she’ll take her cues from you and Aurelie, seasoned travelers, and become a brilliant adventurer like her parents. 🥳 This is exciting!
It is exciting! I still remember the (then) two-day voyage from where I was born, in Lincolnshire, England, to Orkney—lots of vivid recollections of those journeys, whether by train or car/landrover. I’m hopeful introducing the world to Ailsa will do likewise.
Bon voyage! Thank you for the pre-travel postcard. I'm very much looking forward to your impressions on revisiting a place with so much meaning for you after an extended time away. Safe journey!
Thank you! This will be my first long-haul adventure in the era of Substack Notes, so we'll see how that works out...! I do wonder how Ailsa will take to it, too, whether the heat, humidity, mosquitoes, the smells, sounds, and, well, everything else which is different. She's usually incredibly interested in everything, so I am hopeful she'll wear herself out studying things, enough to counteract any time zone issues!
I am very envious of your trip Alex, I travelled SE Asia extensively in my twenties - where did all those years go? - I would love to go back again. I wonder how differently I would see and feel those places in this decade of my life? A decade which is about to change…
Have the most fabulous trip my friend, I will look forward to your postcards with a tinge of green!
« The mountain exhales at night… » I’ve just written that exact line in my post to be sent to you in June… unbelievable ! I will try to reword it!
Ah, that's fantastic, that you had written the exact same line. Don't change it though! If I were you, I'd keep it in and maybe put a footnote about the coincidence/synchronicity? I am very much looking forward to reading your next post, thank you so much!
One day, I also look forward to hearing more about your travels. I image things out there are different in some ways, but also the same in others. I almost headed out there in my 20s, too, but then it ended up being my 40s instead. I'm not sure where THOSE years went, either.
Thanks! I think I might post a lot more to Notes (assuming I have data/WiFi to do so!), then collate them, for those who don't use Notes. I think it will be fun, too!
I both wish for you that you will have an internet connection, but also that you won’t, so you can be truly free for a few days! Either way, we’ll be excited to see where you’ve been. :)
I wish the same thing, thanks! There’ll certainly be no internet for a while whilst travelling, apart from perhaps a spot of WiFi here or there—but I have ensured I have a LOT of things to read on my phone and Kobo whilst not being able to sleep... I’m excited to be able to share things here though!
Such glorious writing! I hope you all have the most magical time in Chiang Mai and beyond. I look forward to reading how it’s same same but different from our shared time there! Stay safe!
Thank you so much Amy. It is going to be strange and different (especially with a 2 year-old in tow!), I'm sure but, as you say, also same same! Shall say hello to Chiang Mai from you! Sending hugs across the globe!
“A human is a human and we are a part of a glorious, natural, whole.” Well said. Love these photographs! Such luminous places. Safe travels and adventures.

Thanks again, hope you have more sunshine now?
Thanks for taking us with you
I'm very much looking forward to sharing!
Enjoy your adventures! It will be fun to see more postcards from you. :)

Many thanks! I'm very much looking forward to adding to my photography collection, along with introducing Ailsa to a new-to-her continent.
safe travels
Thank you! I can imagine it will be a little different, travelling from continent to continent with a much smaller human in tow!
