Well the election votes are being counted. Looks close. I had to stop watching on tv. I’m not going to lose any sleep over votes uncounted. I feel a woman president can lead this country with right choices and hope no violence. I am content to write, continue on a novel/memoir. I enjoy our conversations. Stay healthy. Flu season is upon us. I’ve never had a flu shot. Let my body build up its own defenses and stay healthy, eat low on ’totem pole’ vegan ad I can be.

This year, I’ve increased the number of plants, fungi, lichen etc I am using to help fight off viruses—it is little Ailsa’s first year at school, which is just a Petrie dish full of things to catch. How long I’ll be able to go without getting sick, I don’t know but, so far, the results are much better than last year, already. When my turkey tail tincture is ready, I’m hoping that will add yet another level to my defences.

As for the election, it is interesting times we live in, that’s for sure.

You stay healthy, too. I too enjoy our conversations, thank you.

Mugwort tea, yes a bit bitter, a dream enhancer as is black sage which I‘be taken for a runny nose in allergy season.it lets you sleep, but after 3-4 times has opposite effect and keeps you awake. I’ve leached California live oak and chopped up the acorn meat ,added wild onions and sautéed. Taste very close to hamburger. I woke up (12:40am) just to write a note. More in later morning here.

I don’t know black sage, other than by the name—I love how many different species of plant (and everything living, I suppose), there are, and how many we can use for positive (or negative!) effects. I feel like I am barely scratching the surface of this field with my own knowledge, mostly of European species, but some from SE Asia and a few from elsewhere, too. Yet I’ve been studying this for decades. Isn’t that wonderful? How much we can know—and how much we still have to learn!

I add Salvia officinalis to a tea I take every evening.

I’m only half way through. Need to sleep. Will continue tomorrow. Just want to say, again, what a privilege it is to read this…

Thank you, so much. I know these are quite long letters, but they are also specifically designed to be readable in smaller chunks, a bit more like a book than a newsletter, I suppose.

A story to take in doses to mull like wine and then drink the mixed fruits of your labor. I have saved your journey-journal all day to read before sleep. But your health appears strong. Your food choices, wellness, rest and possibly no contact with microbes from other people. Did you gather any acorns and prepare them for food? You must know the fungi to eat, perhaps found some roots and berries, leaves for tea. I put your writing aside. Until tomorrow night.

Thanks RIchard! I love that analogy. As for acorns, I did gather them but, instead of processing them for eg flour, I kept them in my pockets and planted them as I walked and explored, finding small, perfect spots for each, usually ensuring the little trees could not be reached as easily by the red deer. There were too many deer, and no young trees at all, no understorey of eg hazel, to speak of. That is a landscape which is crying out for the lynx, the wolf, and the bear. And also to simply stop the archaic practice of paying a fortune to landowners, just to shoot a deer for sport. (I have no problems with hunting for food, but just to kill? Sigh.) And yes, I knew several species of fungi (I know a lot more now, that's a skillset to learn slowly!), ate some roots, a LOT of berries, and used leaves for tea. I also harvested the foreshore, with various seaweeds, shellfish, crabs, fish etcetera--that is where the majority of calories could/would come from, if I had to live off the land.

Many thanks for reading, I really appreciate your comments. (And it is amusing you mention the no contact with microbes thing, too, considering what happened to me the week after the one you are currently reading!!)
