Those icicles - giant stalactites! Great to enjoy your adventure vicariously in an armchair by the fire!

Thanks! Yes, just writing it made me feel a bit cold!

Alex, wonderful to sit in your wam hobbit hut and hear the icicles crash. The writing is natural progression seeing a Walden pond frozen, but no ice skates. Otter pix were a treasure as the deer. Keeping your hand warm and your pen from freezing. I wonder if the NASA astronauts pens would freeze. They can write through butter and upside down. Might look into buying a few over the internet.

Care to share a good recipe like a natural pemmican of Native Americans? Some UK GORP ? Must be something people devour in the Alps. Let me know. Totally enjoyed your experience.

Aurélie has a Fisher space pen, and she loves it! I do sometimes want to steal it, but have so far resisted. I'm not sure whether they freeze or not, though!

I have been known to make my own beef jerky to take out into the woods, which is really simple, but I've yet to make pemmican--it is definitely on the list of things I shall do with Ailsa, however. I love raisins and peanuts, usually adding some M&Ms too, and keeping a small bag in my coat pocket, with a paper bag of jerky in the other pocket. Amazing what just a small handful and a piece of jerky can do to energy levels! Traditionally, in Scotland, oat cakes were a trail food. Here in the Alps, I'm not really sure, but I would not be surprised if it was a similar sort of hard tack, maybe dried meat and also hard cheese. Cheese here is a big thing! Probably goats cheese, as this is a staple of much of the area. I would also suspect they dried fruit, whether grapes/raisins, or berries. Definitely one to research more!

"Feeling the sun hit your face after a frigid night is astonishing, a moment of pure primal or animal joy."

It is something I often think about here, and now—the sun doesn’t appear from behind the mountains until after 1100 so, when/if it does, it is like someone has turned on a heater in front of the face. I try to make sure I am upstairs in the kitchen (with south-facing windows) when it appears, or even just stand outside for a short time. There is a power and magic in that.
